Department of Music

Spectral’s STORA LK rings have been used to stunning effect within the Department of Music at Kings College Strand Campus. This is the founding campus of King’s College London and is located on the Strand in the City of Westminster, sharing its frontage along the River Thames. The original campus comprises the Grade I listed King’s Building of 1831, and the college chapel. Today it is one of the worlds leading establishments for the training of classical music.

The project involved the refurbishment of the music rooms within Levels 0 and 2 of the Kings Building. Working together with Wilson Mason Architects and White Young Green M+E consultants, 1.9m STORA-LK rings were specified to add a bold look to the rooms while maintaining a pendant style chandelier design. These were also selected for a contemporary but classical look. Performance was important too as the rings needed to supply not only a high level of lighting but also a uniform one. The rings also had to provide a high level of indirect lighting to accentuate the tall ceilings and provide good vertical lighting. The result is a well-lit space which is both comfortable and adjustable for the various tasks.

For added user comfort, the STORA-LK’s were provided with DALI dimmable control which could separately control the direct and indirect light. These were linked back to scene controllers at each end of the room – as well as a central touch screen. Integral emergency gear was also integrated into the ring structures which meant no unsightly emergency boxes on the ceiling.
